A Boy and his Ax

I am not one of those "helicopter" parents. I believe that kids learn best when they do things on their own. I remember my childhood days running around the side of the mountain when we lived in Kentucky. We went exploring and made up all kinds of fantasy games.
To be a kid again...those were the days.
When my kids are off doing something...mind you...the majority are teens now, I don't pay that much attention to them.

So we are sitting on the front porch, Lil' Monster swings his leg up and plants his feet on the coffee table. As I am telling him to get his feet off the table, Lil' Miss asks him what happened to his leg. I didn't even notice the 4x4 bandage covered in blood that he had taped with Scotch tape around his leg.

Me:"What the heck did you do to your leg?"
Him: "I hit it with an ax".
Me..."Hmmm, okay...did you wash it out and put antibiotic ointment on?" Him: "Yeah".
{shrugging shoulders}..."Okay".

So the next day...{such a bad mom} I look at the wound and this is what I see.

Not to bad...it looks clean. I suspect he'll be able to keep the leg.

It reminded me of another time...
This is his brother about two years ago...only he was OLDER...and wearing a pair of NEW JEANS that I had just bought for school. I was more ticked that the jeans had a hole in them than the nice gash in his leg.

It must run in the family too.

I remember a cousin doing the same thing on a family camping trip...and my little brother...not so little any more, doing the same thing when he was a kid.

I am sure they will swing that ax better next time.
