That has been a total waste of money! I do use the "spray" for the furniture, but I have no idea on the effectiveness of that product.
Here is what you have to do if you want it gone!
First, you need to TREAT the head. The ONLY thing that I have found that will REALLY kill the lice is Tea Tree Oil.
You can find it at Walmart for about $8. Way better than spending $25 on a lice kit. Plus you need a lice comb. I perfer the plastic ones because the medal ones tend to bend out of shape when there are knots in the hair.
Pour it DIRECTLY on the head and lather it....then LEAVE it on for the rest of the day...and OVERNIGHT!
It will stink to high heaven...but it WORKS. I had one child who was so infested that the lice were dropping out of her head like dead flies!
Discusting...but I would rather see them dead than crawling....
Oh my gosh...it gets me itching everytime!
After you have treated the person's hair...because it isn't only the kids who get it...
You HAVE GOT to TREAT ALL FABRICS in the house. That includes the furniture AND carpets!!! Heck, if the curtains are close enough to the couch or bed...I would do them too!
Strip the beds. If you do not have a steam washer or dryer...the best thing is to wash them in EXTRA HOT water and dry them on EXTRA HOT...then BAG them in PLASTIC garbage bags for at least two weeks!
DO NOT FORGET THE TOYS!!! ANY STUFFED ANIMALS OR DOLLS need to be bagged as well.
Believe me, it won't kill them to do without a favorite toy for a while.
If it is cooler (or Winter) and they are wearing hats, and jackets/coats...TREAT THEM AS WELL!!!!
As for treating the furniture and carpet, I always spray it down with the lice spray and let it sit for the day. Then I vaccum/sweep every square inch and REAPPLY the spray. I usually vaccum/sweep a couple of times a day, but when lice is involved...I do it MORE.
Okay...the next morning after sleeping with the Tea Tree Oil over night. You need to COMB all the lice and NITS OUT. Most of the time, the nits will not just come out. You have to PULL them out.
If they are "dead" nits...they will be a clear/pearly looking tear drop shape. If they are "LIVE" they will be a brown/blackish tear drop shape. THOSE are what you have to worry about.
I section off the hair a small section at at time and go through the hair strand by strand. I will warn you, it takes HOURS. But I don't care. I can't stand it....so I will break my back until every little nit is outa there! Because one little nit will be hundreds of new ones in a couple of days!
Also check the backs of the neck and around the back of the ears. They are there too! Check for little black specks on the skin and "scratch it off!"
Make sure you wash her hands and clean under your finger nails...that is a good way for you to get it. Those little buggers get under the fingernails and we freak out with the "itching" of our own heads and start scratching...and BAM...there you got it!
Also, clean the comb after each pass through the hair. You don't want to "redeposit" a nit.
Now that you "think" you got it all...keep combing the hair for about two weeks with the lice comb. When you don't see anything after two weeks...you are probably safe...
